Well, ya know, when it comes to fancy watches, that Patek Philippe 5170 sure gets a lotta talk. Folks round here ain’t much into them high-end tickers, but I reckon it’s somethin’ to look at if you’re into them watches that cost more than a whole year’s worth of groceries! This 5170 model, well, it ain’t cheap. I hear it’s been priced around $80,600 when it was brand new. Now, I ain’t sayin’ I know much about them fancy price tags, but I sure do know that ain’t pocket change for most folks!
This here Patek Philippe 5170, folks say it’s got somethin’ called “complications.” I don’t really know what that means, but I reckon it’s just a way of sayin’ it’s a real fancy watch with a whole lotta stuff inside it. I reckon you can see the time, but you probably need a manual to figure out all them little bits and bobs it can do. A lotta people talk about how it’s got a manual-wind movement, and that makes it special, or somethin’. If you ask me, a watch just needs to tell the time, but I guess this one does a lot more, and that’s why people are so crazy about it.
Now, this here 5170, they made it with a real pretty white gold case. I seen some folks around the city wearin’ it with them blue dials. I ain’t sure what’s so special about a blue dial, but they say it gives it that “vintage” feel. Maybe that’s just what the young folks say when they don’t wanna admit they spent too much on somethin’. But the 5170G, that one is the one that gets a lotta praise. Ain’t many things more fancy than a watch that’s got blue and gold all over it.
But then, I hear there’s somethin’ even fancier, called the 5172G. It replaced the 5170, I reckon. Now, this one here’s got that same fancy winding system—people call it “CH 29-535 PS.” I ain’t never heard of that, but I reckon it’s somethin’ that makes this watch tick real good. They made it in white gold too, just like the 5170, and I hear it’s got that same blue dial. I don’t rightly know what makes it better than the 5170, but I guess it’s the newer model, and folks like that kinda thing. It’s like when they come out with a new tractor, and all the farmers gotta have the latest model, even though it does the same thing as the last one!
Folks say the 5170 is part of a big family of watches, part of the chronograph dynasty, they call it. Now, I don’t know much about dynasties, but I sure do know that a family of watches that lasts that long must be doin’ somethin’ right. A lotta watches come and go, but these ones, they stick around. I guess that’s why so many rich folks want ‘em. Makes ‘em feel like they’re part of a special group.
I also hear that the Patek Philippe brand has a lotta different models, and they’ve even got one called the Grandmaster Chime. Now, this one’s got 20 different “complications”—whatever that means—and it’s mighty hard to get your hands on one. I reckon they only made a few, and folks say it’s the hardest Patek Philippe watch to get. You’d think it was made outta gold and diamonds the way people talk about it. It’s all real fancy, but I ain’t ever gonna be able to afford one of them. I reckon I’ll stick to my ol’ wristwatch I got from the flea market.
But, even though these watches cost a pretty penny, they sure do get a lotta attention. I reckon folks like to have somethin’ that shows off their fancy taste, and maybe the 5170 is one of them watches that does just that. Now, I don’t know if I’d ever spend that much on a watch, but to each their own, right? Some people just love havin’ somethin’ shiny on their wrist, especially when it’s a brand like Patek Philippe, that’s been makin’ watches for a long time.
So, if you ever get the chance to see one of them 5170 watches in person, take a look, ’cause I hear they’re real somethin’ to behold. But don’t expect to see one of them sittin’ in the kitchens round here. We got enough to worry about without spendin’ all our money on watches. But, for the city folk who got cash to burn, I guess it’s somethin’ to dream about.
