Okay, so I decided to tackle remaking the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. You know, the one from the official flagship store. Sounds fancy, right? Well, it is, and let me tell you, it was a journey.
First off, I started by staring at pictures of this watch. I mean, really staring. This Patek Philippe Calatrava, it’s something else. They call it a “Clous de Paris” bezel, all shiny and polished. People say it’s worth more than my house. I don’t know about that, but it sure looks expensive. I got it in my head that I wanted to try and remake it. Not to sell or anything, just to see if I could do it. I knew I couldn’t make an exact replica, but I thought, why not try?
I gathered all sorts of materials. You wouldn’t believe the stuff I had lying around. I started with this old watch I had. Tore it apart, looked at all the little pieces. The 6119R-001 is supposed to have, like, 164 parts. I definitely didn’t have that many, but I had enough to get started. So, I began tinkering, you know, putting things together, taking them apart, trying to figure out how it all worked.
It wasn’t easy, not at all. I tried to make the hands look like the ones on the real watch. The real Calatrava has these three-dimensional hands. Mine? Not so much. But I kept at it. I even tried to do something with the bezel, you know, that “Clous de Paris” thing. It’s not the same, but it’s got a little bit of that vibe, I think.
I spent hours on this thing. Days, really. My wife thought I was crazy. “Why are you doing this?” she asked. “It’s not going to be a real Patek Philippe.” And she’s right, it’s not. But it’s mine, you know? It’s something I made. It’s got its own character.
I finally got it to a point where I was happy with it. It doesn’t look exactly like the real Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001, not even close, maybe. But it tells the time, and it’s got that kind of classic look. I even started wearing it around. It’s a bit bigger than I thought it would be, but I like it.
Some folks say the real Calatrava is a good investment. I wouldn’t know. They say it’s a status symbol, but it might not be practical for everyday wear. Maybe that’s true. But I like wearing my remake. It reminds me of the time I spent making it, and that’s worth something to me.
Would I recommend doing this? I don’t know. It was a lot of work. And if you’re thinking about buying a remake, you should know it’s not a real one. But for me, it was a fun project. It was a way to learn something new, to challenge myself. And in the end, I made something I’m proud of. And that’s all that really matters, right?
